Call for Papers

The 16th Real-Time Networks (RTN) 2018 is a satellite workshop of the 30th Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems (ECRTS 2018), the premier European venue for presenting research into the broad area of real-time and embedded systems.

The RTN workshop is the sixteen in the series of workshops that started at the 2002 ECRTS conference. No edition took however place in 2015. To continue a new series of workshops, RTN 2018 focuses on the real-time aspects of the new IEEE standards for Time-Sensitive Networking. Besides, accepted papers will be published in SIGBED Review unless authors explicitly refuse in order to keep material for a later publication in a conference or journal.

The RTN workshop provides a relaxed forum for both industrial and academic participants to present and discuss new ideas, new research directions and to review current trends in the area of real-time networks and NoC. Schedule will provide significant time for discussions among the attendees.

The RTN workshop seeking regular research paper or position paper that should not exceed 6 pages. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Real-time network on chips (NoC)
  • Real-time Software Defined Networks (SDN)
  • Real-time message scheduling and mapping over off and on-chip networks (TSN, Ethernet, CAN, FlexRay, NoC, etc.)
  • Real-time applications (automotive, aerospace, multimedia, etc.): implementation, experimentation and evaluation
  • Performance evaluation, simulation and modeling tools of real-time networks (automotive, aerospace, multimedia, etc.)
  • Real-time aspects of networked embedded systems and sensors, cyber-physical systems, internet of things
  • Real-time network management and time synchronization
  • Real-time aspects of Wireless technologies and Sensor Networks (WSNs) and applications

Special Session

NEW: Collaborative session on TSN Networks and Open Real-Time Problems!

In addition to presentation sessions, a collaborative session will be setup to stimulate exchange between participants on the topic of TSN networks and open real-time problems. Different types of contributions, including demos, informal presentations, posters, are encouraged to animate this session!

Interested participants should contact the workshop chairs for proposal as soon as possible!

Submission Instructions

The deadline for submission is listed in the RTN website.

Paper Submission

All papers will be reviewed by the workshop Program Committee and should be written in English.

All accepted papers will be published in the ACM SIGBED Review Special Interest Group on Embedded Systems unless authors explicitly refuse in order to keep material for a later publication in a conference or journal. By accepting that papers are published in the ACM SIGBED Review, authors give permission to publish and include the papers in ACM Digital Library.

Papers should not exceed 6 pages in ACM SIG format, see Link to ACM SIG format.

Research papers should present original research results not published or submitted for publication in other forums. Authors of accepted papers agree to attend the workshop and to present their work during the workshop.

The submission must be done through EasyChair, on this page : Link to Paper Submission

Demo Submission

Proposals for Demo presentation shall be submitted by email to the workshop chairs following the instructions below:

  • Email subject: "RTN18-DEMO SUBMISSION: " + demo title
  • Attachment including:
  •  Demo Title
  •  Authors and affiliation
  •  Short description (10-20 lines)

The title and short description of accepted demos will be listed in the RTN program.

Poster Submission

Proposal for Posters shall be submitted by email to the workshop chairs following the instructions below:

  • Email subject: "RTN18-POSTER SUBMISSION: " + poster title
  • Attachment (in ACM SIG format, see Link to ACM SIG format) including:
  •  Poster Title
  •  Authors and affiliation
  •  Poster abstract (one page max)

The title and abstract of accepted posters will be added in the RTN proceedings.

Keynote Talk

Wilfried Steiner, TTTech Computertechnik AG

Time-Sensitive Networking - Technical Overview and the Bigger Picture

IEEE 802.1 Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is standardizing various protocols and mechanisms that enable the use of standard Ethernet networks for real-time communication. Upon others, TSN also provides means to improve network dependability and supports software-defined networking concepts. In this talk I will give a brief technical overview of the TSN protocols and mechanisms but will also focus on non-technical aspects of TSN. In particular, I will discuss the IEEE standardization process itself as well as the role of adjacent standardization organizations and interest groups. Given this Bigger Picture of TSN, I will continue to discuss TSN research directions and will provide a personal perspective on their potential for industrial impact.

About the speaker

Wilfried Steiner is Corporate Scientist at TTTech Computertechnik AG and Leader of the research team TTTech Labs. He holds a degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. His research is focused on dependable cyber-physical systems and he contributes in the domains of automotive, space, aerospace, as well as new energy and industrial automation. While the initial targets of Wilfried Steiner’s research have been rather compact systems, such as automobiles and airplanes, Wilfried Steiner more recently also addresses research problems in the area of Internet of Things (IoT), like the Industrial IoT and Industrie 4.0, as well as connected vehicles.
