Local information

ECRTS 2023 will be held in Vienna, Austria. The conference will be hosted at TU Wien, which is located right in the center of Vienna.

The ECRTS 2023 conference and workshops will be held in the Campus Gußhaus main building of TU Wien (see map). Enter the Campus Gußhaus main building in Gußhausstraße 27 and follow the signs to get to the conference/workshop site.


While this is not an official tourist site, we’d like to give you some ideas about places to visit and things to do in and around Vienna. The Official Tourist Guide of the City of Vienna can be found here.

    • Have some coffee in one of Vienna’s famous Cafes (e.g., Sacher, Demel, Diglas, Eiles, Central, Kurkonditorei Oberlaa)

    • Enjoy a nice dinner at a restaurant (Plachutta, Wiener Wiazhaus, Zwölf Apostelkeller, Wienerin) or at a Viennese “Heurigen” (winery) in the Grinzing area

    • Visit historic places in the city (e.g., the Hofburg Castle, Schönbrunn Castle, the Treasury, St. Stephens Cathedral, St. Charles church, or the historic buildings along the famous Ringstraße (circular road around the city center)

    • Attend a concert in one of Vienna's concert halls or visit one of Vienna's numerous museums

Further things you might enjoy:

    • Stroll around and explore the pedestrian zones and alleys in the city center of Vienna.

    • Take a hike in the surroundings of Vienna. While hiking through the vineyards at the edge of the city you may enjoy the beautiful views on the city.

    • Relax at the Danube Island (Donauinsel), Vienna’s largest recreation area and beach

    • Have fun at the Prater amusement park

    • Enjoy a boat trip at the Danube river

A few more things in the vicinity of Vienna:

    • A number of baroque monasteries (Heiligenkreuz, Klosterneuburg, Göttweig, or Melk) are located in a short distance from Vienna.

    • The renaissance castle Schloss Hof, is definitely a place you must see. It's a 45 minutes drive from Vienna.

    • To those who'd like to explore the beauty of nature, we recommend a visit to the Neusiedler-See national park or Donau-Auen national park (Nationalpark Neusiedler See - Seewinkl, Nationalpark Donau-Auen).

Traveling to Vienna by Plane

Vienna International Airport (VIE) is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Vienna. The airport, also called Flughafen Wien-Schwechat, is served by most international airlines.

Vienna Airport to City Center (Karlsplatz)

by Train/S-Bahn and underground

There are frequent trains from Vienna Airport to the "Wien Mitte" and "Wien Hauptbahnhof (Hbf.)" train stations. From both stations there are direct underground connections to the "Karlsplatz" and "Taubstummengasse" underground stations, which are both close to the conference venue.

From "Wien Mitte" to "Karlsplatz": take underground U4 direction "Hütteldorf" for two stops.
From "Hauptbahnhof" to "Taubstummengasse": take underground U1 direction "Leopoldau" for one stop.

Tickets from Vienna Airport to Karlsplatz or Taubstummengasse (Train/S-Bahn and underground) are EUR 4,30 (one way).

by Train (City Airport Train, CAT)

CAT is a shuttle train between Vienna Airport and "Wien Mitte". From "Wien Mitte" take underground U4, direction "Hütteldorf" for two stops, and exit at "Karlsplatz".

The fare is EUR 14,90 (or EUR 24,90 for a return ticket) for CAT plus EUR 2,40 for the underground (one way).

The fare between Vienna Airport and Karlsplatz or Taubstummengasse is about EUR 40.

Traveling to Vienna by Train

Most international trains will take you to Wien Hauptbahnhof, i.e., Vienna central station.
To get from "Hauptbahnhof" to "Karlsplatz" take underground U1 in direction "Leopoldau" for two stops. From "Hauptbahnhof" to "Taubstummengasse" take underground U1 (direction "Leopoldau") for one stop.
The fare for the underground is EUR 2,40 (one way).

For trains arriving at Westbahnhof station, take underground U3 to "Stephansplatz" (direction "Simmering"). At "Stephansplatz" change to U1, direction "Oberlaa", and exit at "Karlsplatz" (one stop) or "Taubstummengasse" (two stops).
The ticket for the underground is EUR 2,40 (one way).

There are a number of hotels in walking distance from the conference site at TU Wien. Because of the central location of TU Wien, the sights of the city center as well as many museums and a lot of good restaurants and pubs are easily accessible from these hotels.
